Spooky happening
31 Answers
The other night, as I was trying to get to sleep, the oddest thing happened.
As I was dozing off, I felt something about the size of a cat jump onto the bottom of my bed, run up and then jump around my head. I opened my eyes and it stopped. Twice after that, as I was dropping off to sleep the scampering around my head happened again; on the second occasion, I tried to say "stop", but found that I could not speak.
I had a head full of cold and was possibly running a temperature - but this was quite a realistic and slightly scary experience.
Any explanations? I'm thinking in terms of congestion causing my inner ear canals to cause confusion. But it would be interesting to hear any theories - and whether there are any parallels in the supernatural sense!

I got fraked out staying in an old country house on a conference while I was at uni.
Me and two other girls were sleeping in a room in the old staff quarters and in the middle of the night I felt something smack down on my leg.
Knew if wasn't either of the girls as both were asleep and nowhere near my bed. We slept with the light on for the rest of the night!
We tried to ask some of the staff about it the next day, whether the place is haunted etc... and they were very cagey about the whole thing!

If you had a temperature and were sleepy, it could simply be a hallucination. Are you 100% you were awake and not dreaming?
When I last had a temperature I was dozing on the sofa when the pattern on the wallpaper seemed to be leaving the walls and heading for me. It was scary!
My husband told me I had anaglyptic shock.

I just googled the place I stayed and seems I'm not the only one...

Could it have been sleep paralysis or "Old Hag"?
I had it years ago and it is so frightening; it felt like something was sat on me pinning my arms by my sides, I could hear everything that was going on but when I tried to scream I couldn't make a sound, I didn't even have the energy to open my eyes. It happens when you are dropping off to sleep (or in reverse when you are waking, which happened to me) and basically, when you go into a deep sleep, you body becomes paralyed otherwise you would reenact all of the physical actions in your dreams, and that would be flipping dangerous (like sleep walking), so when you suffer from sleep paralysis your brain has reached the point that it makes your body paralysed before you are fully asleep / awake. Does that make sense?

Incidentally, at the time, I was terrified and when I came round I was out of breath and hysterical. Nowadays, though, when it happens, it is possible to reassure yourself by keeping calm and saying (in your mind) "It'll stop in a few seconds". Admittedly, the seconds feel a long time. Also, another thing i do is, if I feel an episode coming on, I begin to wiggle my toes, with all of my strength and effort, and inevitably it "wakes" my body and I come round quicker.
P.S. I'm not mental

Sleep paralysis more usual in deep sleep. It may be that weird ittle moment before you actually go into full REM sleep.
This is uausally the point where I find that I trip over something and jog myself awake.
The brain is a weird thing and it is never weirder than when your sleeping.
It can do all sorts of wierd stuff to you.
I get what is commonly called night terrors. I haven't ever come across anything so bad in all my life.
I can't move or scream and it's usually down to some one I hate or a completely unknown person who I am dreaming about. It feels very very real when it's happening and once I have struggled to wake I can't sleep fpr about 3 nights afterwards.

Coo. Sleep paralysis it is then!
I definitely wasn't asleep and managed to free myself from the state the second time, albeit with some effort. I knew that there was nothing in the room with me, but the overall effect was utterly convincing.
It would seem to explain all those ghost encounters and alien abductions, wouldn't it?

We used to get the smeel of Parma Violets in our house. and we had a cat in the small bedroom.
and in the mornings at about 5.30 am some one would march down the stairs and out the front door even though it was locked.
We waited up one night for the stairs to go and I was on the middle landing with H at the top and the landlord at the bottom. Down it came along with a draft and out the door it went. The front door rattled slightly as it went.
I was gob smacked.
We just got used to it. There wasn't anything to be afraid of.

My friend lived in an enormous six bed house and there were always spooky goings on including the smell of burned bacon every now and then, and the image of a girl in one of the bedrooms. Upon further investigation we found out that the house has burnt down during the 1700s and half of it had to be rebuilt, and a girl was killed in the fire.
We also "met" a German man who lived in the UK in the early 1900s and when his wife and two daughters died (of natural causes) he decided to "stay behind" and keep this girl company.
Looking back it was very odd, but we would play games with them by lining up goods on a counter and asking them to put them back where they should be while we left the room, or get them to swing something on the back of the door, etc.
It would scare the pants off me to do that now but I was about 14 at the time and not scared of anything!
