Endocrinologists (Doctors who specialise in Hormones) now believe PCOS is linked with insensitivity to Insulin. The main problem with the condition is that it can cause infertility and mean your periods can stop.
Treatment offered to treat symptoms can be the contraceptive pill to regulate periods or the drug Metformin, which is normally used for Diabetics, but has been shown to help with regulating ovulation and balancing Insulin levels.
Other symptoms of PCOS is weight gain, acne and excessive body or facial hair. Keeping your weight down can help to lessen the effects.

I've got cysts too with bad periods but after an examination the doctors just said oooh you have lots of cysts on your ovaries...nobody even suggested for a second this could be the cause or that there was anything that could be done to help me. I'm now on the contraceptive pill but if the cysts are caused by an inbalance in progesterone surely taking the contraceptive pill wouldn't help? I'm having problems with that too anyhow. And it says on the information booklet that comes with my pill that this type of pill (the mini pill to be taken daily with no breaks) can cause cysts. Surely if I already have cysts then giving me a pill to give me more won't help my periods or my problem!! Grrrrr.

Littlekitty - a scan showed that I had three huge cysts on my ovaries a few months back. They were at bursting point, so I had to have my fallopian tubes and ovaries removed, although I still have the womb, in case we decide to add to our family later on.
PCOS is quite common, and small cysts can be lasered away, or you can be helped by taking Metformin, as Velvetee suggested. You mustn't ignore this condition though, because there are several types of ovarian cysts. x
