My partner kicked something in a temper a few months back and his foot is still not the same after all this time, the main area of pain is the ball just under the big toe, also it is still swollen...any ideas what he could have done to it....thanks

lil - did your partner think of having an xray done at the time of incident? There could just be some tissue damage in that part of the foot. Regarding the swelling, they obviously haven't realised it was so bad, therefore no rest has been taken. I would recon that constantly walking on this foot would keep aggrevating the area, therefore causing the swelling. I would advise them to see their GP for further advice/xray on the affected area, this is your partners best bet. Hope things improve.

It's probably Gout , that's often how it starts especially in the joint you are talking about. Has it got better for a while and suddenly become painful again on and off?
and before someone corrects me, I don't mean that's how gout starts I mean that's how it first makes itself known.
Possibly a fracture of a sesamoid bone. These small spherical bones are located within the tendons where they round the ball of the foot. They have a very poor blood supply and take a very long time to heal.

They are especially prone to breaking when the toes are hyperflexed as could be the case of the object was kicked with the ball of the foot. The impact would also contribute.

He need to get x-rays and see a podiatrist. The longer it is left the more problems will ensure from walking weirdly.
