The named person was a female friend who he confided in/discussed our relationship problems with; the unnamed texter was an SMS chat thing. We had problems which we were both aware of and responsible for but ignored.
He has said he has stopped the friendship and the texting and we are trying to make this work.
Because we have pretty much led separate lives over the past few years apart from building up trust again we need to think about things to talk about rather than the weather! We have a long way to go .....
Thanks for any suggestions! I have already decided that the next time we go out we should treat it as a first date!

If I have suggestion on your 'first date' don't go out for a meal. You'll both be acting a part sitting in front of each other and trying your hardest for everything to be what it isn't (just like a first date!)
I suggest an outing where you visit something both of you are interested in or a nice long walk so long as it's something with plenty going on around you, and why not end it with a couple of drinks.
Most importantly, dress to please (not over the top) and hope he does likewise; this is one of the problems in couples as they get older they slip into comfort clothes and you're a middle-aged couple before you know it! Good luck to you both!

Well she is a first class cook and inevitably we find that we get inferior food at inflated prices. I do what I am told and NEVER do something that she hasn't suggested BUT:
Goldhoop, even if he is having an affair, what is the big deal. Firstly statistics tell us that it is almost certainly going to "fizzle" out and having a "mistress" is accepted in France, Greece and many other countries. He is only looking for excitement and sex, which may be missing in your marriage.
Keep "stum" or get a lover yourself if you think that it will help.
