Holland and Barretts sell the weight gain shakes or you could go to your local gym where there should be a supply.

Hope that helps.
They are also available on prescription but I'm not sure what they are called.
Your body can only digest around 55g of protein per day, (depending on body weight). Protein tends to be taken by those wishing to gain muscle bulk through weight training.

Your brother in law probably needs to just increase his calorie intake and carbs to help him gain weight, so foods higher in calories, like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta could help.

If you want supplements, look at the Maximuscle website, which has products specifically for gaining weight.
