Neither.

Chalk under the tongue will not make you faint.

It is not an old wives' tale - it is your friend's tale.
You would need to seriously concentrate toi hold your breath until you have to breathe, and then repeat a few times, and you may black out for a few seconds, certainly no more. As soon as you start to loose conciousness, your brain will re-sart your breathing again, an automatic survival mechanism.

Never heard about chalk under the tongue - sounds unlikely though - more likely to make you vomit than pass out!
well u could not eat or drink for the whole day, travel for couple hours, then go shopping at a busy shopping centre.

i passed out!
never again.
the chalk - i think not too but when i was at school in the 60s a craze did go round one year to make yourself faint. i never tried it but it involved breath holding, nose pinching and blowing out hard at the same time. became a problem enough for the school to realise what was going on and forbid it. Never understood the pleasure they got from it though, it was at break so not to get out of anything. mind you looking back maybe they were just faking (girls mainly did it!)
There was a mad craze going around my school at one time. The person who was going to faint had to take 12 deep breaths slowly, stand against a wall and then someone would push on their heart until they fainted. Used to scare the hell out of me, so I never tried it! Never heard of the chalk trick though.......
Did you go to Petersfield school. It all sounds familiar Curly
If you stroke a part of your neck, both sides, simultaneously you cna faint. Not sure where but was told to do this to slow my heart rate down when i have an attack.
Chalk old wives tale!!!
At school (many moons ago) putting blotting paper in your socks was meant to make you faint. Can't remember if it actually worked and doubt you'd be able to buy blotting paper now!
At school (many moons ago) people used to put blotting paper in their socks to make them faint. Can't remember if it ever worked.
I remember whan I was at Primary school, a fad started, where kids would make themselves faint, by holding their breaths for longer than they should. The Headmaster was up in arms and called a special assembly, threatening suspension or explusion, if the trend continued. I didn't do it though.
I remember, years ago I did this, Inhale deeply, keep your mouth closed, and try to breath out through your mouth, hard, but its dangerous.

I passed out only for a few seconds, but in doing so, knocked my head against a corner, never again.
I'm with clio57 on this one, but I remember being told that putting blotting paper in your shoes made you faint! Never tried it myself!
You can't hold your breath long enough to make you faint - your body responses take over long before you faint.

If stroking your neck made you faint mother's the world over would do it with crying babies and fractious children,

They were playground shams - kids pretending.

I remember a wierd fainting craze as well which made the school go mad, what was it with some kids!!!

Never heard of the chalk one, can't remember what our lot did as was never into that kind of thing.

I remember some idiots putting olbas oil in their eyes once to see what would happen!?!?! Safe to say I don't think they ever did it again!
Just like to come back on Ethels reply,

You don't just hold your breath, once you've inhaled, you push with everything you've got against your closed mouth.

Believe me, it works.
No it doesn't, Lonnie
Ethel, I know we disagree on this one, but I actually did it, back in the 60's, so I know it works, but I also know how dangerous it is, and i'm not in the habit of embellishing things.
Tried Lonnie's theory and it made feel really sick and my head hurt. Not recomended
SunshineCaz, yes, I did say it was dangerous, if memory serves, your head pounds as well, bit it does work if you want to keep at it, I passed out only for a few seconds,

Nevertheless, I never did it again, and I won't.
