Nervous about a party tonight
3 Answers
I've been invited to a uni party tonight that someone in my class is having. It's a flat party, and this is sad but I haven't really been to a flat party since I've come to university.
I'm quite nervous about talking to people and I'm scared that things will end up in awkward silences.
I don't want to give the wrong impression to people who are answering these questions. I'm a very confident person, but I'm just a bit bad at making conversation. Well, I'd say I am anyway. Plus I don't really have a particular group of friends so don't want to feel like I'm clinging on to people.
Any advice? Should I go? Are there any things I can say to myself before I go to increase my confidence in talking to others? What sort of things should I talk about? I'm so nervous.

You should definitely go tonight. If you're not really enjoying it while you are there, always remember that you are in control & can leave whenever you choose. Make sure you have more than enough money with you for a taxi. I'm sure you will have a drink, & it will help to relax you. (just don't have too much, or it could have the wrong effect.) Also remember that you have been invited to this party, so people must like you. When you make eye contact with anyone, try to remember to smile, you will appear approachable & happy, & that is more likely to encourage people to talk to you. You don't need to fill all silences, but if you feel the need, ask the person a question about themselves, people generally like to talk about themselves. You could also talk about Uni, music, cinema, recent gossip or scandals!
Before you go, keep reminding yourself that you don't have to stay, you can leave whenever you want, & someone chose to ask you to be there, so you must be doing something right!
I hope you have a brilliant time.
Keep smiling!
