i was in the exact same situation as your friend. telling you was definitely the hardest thing that he ever did so try to pick your words carefully when you decide to give him an answer. chances are he has felt like this for ages so take your time before you decide, he won't mind waiting another while. when i told my friend how i felt, she like you didn't know what to say but i gave her all the time she needed and eventually we got together and still are, after a year and a half so in my experience it does work. but remember, don't feel like you SHOULD get together cos your'e friends and stuff, try to imagine yourselves together and see if you think you'd make a couple. theres no point in getting together out of 'duty'. and if you decide that you'd be better off as friends, give him time and space to digest the news. good luck.

My best friend told me he wanted to go out with me and I said it wouldn't work and our friendship was too good to lose. 17 years later we are happily married with 2 kids and he keeps telling me he is always right! good luck whatever you decide

I think if you are asking for advice you cant be 100'/. sure and therefore should not rush into anything.

I married my best mate ... he helped me through a bad split with my then boyfriend so had seen me at my absolute worst.

It might work out, it might not but if the friendship is trong enough it will withstand you splitting up and moving on to other relationships.

Nothing ventured .. nothing gained.  Best of luck with your decision.  xxx

A really good friendship is a good basis for a sound relationship.   At the end of the day if your partner is your best friend  what could be better. Naturally you would have to be physically attracted as well!
Most of my past boyfriends have been very good friends for a long time before we started going out.  I think that's the best way to do it... because you know each other really well and you respect each other.  Also, if you break up (after you take time for a breather from each other), you're more likely to be able to be friends again (I think, based on personal experience) because you've already done it before.
I married my best friend.  On the other hand, I know a chap who went out with a very close friend who he'd liked for years.  2 months into it, he found out she was seeing her ex (one of his mates) behind his back.  They no longer talk, and if forced to meet they always have a huge argument.  He still gets on with his mate though... hmm ... love triangles, strange things.
lora- the only question you need to ask yourself is, do you fancy him?
