Has anyone any advice on taking senokot. My husband had an opperation two weeks ago and he has been constipated for the past two days, he has never had this problem befor I went to Boots and explained the problem and they recommended Senokot. He looked up treatments for this problem and the different medications you can take. As this was confusing he phoned his doctor and he says under no circumstances take Senokot as he would be sick and have diarrhoea? has anyone had this problem I feel like going back into the chemist and complaining

Depends on what the operation was for. I havent heard of anyone getting sick from taking a normal dose of a laxative, if you take too much you can get very ill and dehydrated. It also depends on what medication if any he is on too, they might not mix well with Senokot. You could try a milder laxative life syrup of figs, or dulcolax. Failing that, good old plenty of water and fruit and fibre should do the trick in time, but try not to panic if he hasnt passed anything, unless he starts to feel bloated and generally fatiged due to not having a movement.

I take Linseed Oil in drinking form. I take a tablespoon a day, and then quickly eat some yoghurt... I believe they come in tabs too.

It works very well. And it's good for you, unlike sena, which could leave your husband in agony with stomach cramps.

I get the linseed oil from a healthfood shop, costs �7.50 for a bottle.

This stuff works very rapidly when it does get going. So if you do take it, don't be temped to take more than the smallest dose to begin with. Also, if he takes a small dose and nothing happens, give it a bit more time, or he could find himself sprinting to the loo quick sharp.

I find that my stomach reacts badly to an excess of olive oil or fish oil. It does have the desired effect, but it gives me awful stomach cramps. Some people simply don't get on with fish oils etc.

You could try going to a health shop. They may have a gentler substitute he could try.

I take Senakot if I require too, and have always found they do the trick quite nicely thankyou. S`cuse me...must dash!!!!

I find that if I have a problem a Glycerine suppository inserted works quite quickly and also lubricates the back passageway to make things easier. They can be purchased at any chemist and are totally free of any medication. Hold it in as long as possible for the best result as they need time to melt. We always keep them in our medicine chest. I even asked for one in hospital after an op because i wanted to be allowed home and no problem .

Fybogel, although pretty chewy to drink, is very effective and not as violent !

If doctor has said don't take laxatives by mouth, adopt the rear entrance - try boots glycerine suppositories, which at the worst can do no harm and will not interfere with other medicines he is on.
