Their lives in the new penal colony were so harsh that many died before their 7 year sentence was finished.
When the society settled down and was no longer one huge open gaol,the Australians wanted to leave behind class consciousness and privilege,therefore as there was little connection with the old English aristocracy in the new territory. The Australians valued freedom and equality for all- except possibly the Aborigines.
