sore nipples

my wife is 7 weeks pregnant and over the last couple of days her nipples have become very tender, permanently erect and have turned purple

is this normal and is there anything she can do to soothe them

I used to use my own spit dan, a midwife told me to do it and worked for me.

when i was pregnant with my children i used cut out muslin covered in vaseline and it worked for me

Sore nipples is just one of the many joys of being pregnant.
I wore breast pads in my bra. This alleviated the chaffing.
