dental abscess

anybody had experience of this? I've just had one, 3 weeks of pain and antibiotics, now dentist wants to do invasive treatment, think I'd rather wait and see what happens before dentists attacks me with what seems like a JCB

had an abscess last week cory,Did'nt go to the dentist. I used Corsodyl mouth wash, and also used warm salted water.It went away after about 3 days.

You cannot treat a dental abscess with mouthwash and salt water.
What sort of abscess is it, corylus?

these are the symptoms I had............Pain (toothache) which can quickly become worse. It can be severe and throbbing.
Swelling of the gum which can be tender.
Swelling of the face. The skin over an abscess may become red and inflamed. The Corsodyl and the salt water worked for me.

I had an abscess about four weeks ago and after the antibiotics took the facial swelling down and the pain went, I underwent root canal work to make sure the abscess doesn't reappear which is often what happens. The root canal work didn't hurt at all and took 2 twenty minute appointments. Didn't cost too much and I've had no problems since then.

talking of teeth,what is going on when your tooth becomes sensitive to hot food and drinks,but doesn't hurt at all the rest of the time even with iced water?

I once ended up in hospital because of a tooth abscess. The infection spread into most of my jaw and made me very ill...The pain was unbearable! I would rather give birth to a 20lb baby with no pain relief than go through that again.

My abscess was cured with extensive root canal treatment and intravenous antibiotics.

If you don't get the abscess properly treated corylus, it can not only return at some stage but the poison can get into your bloodstream and cause worse conditions. Best of luck with it.

I don't know why antibiotic treatment would fail - three weeks of it too? But dental treatment is supposed to treat pain, so that sounds like what you might need.

Sometimes root canal treatment is painless - but not always, I regret to say.

Not nice is it corylus?!

I'd recently been in agony with pain in a top back tooth, dosing myself up with painkillers before getting to the dentist.

The x-ray showed an absess & I was given antibiotics. The pain subsided & I haven't had any problems since, thankfully!

Having said that, the dentist said if the pain does comes back, I could consider either having root canal work done, or having it removed, as it's so far back & I don't need it for chewing!!!!

Needless to say, I'm hanging on to it & will go back in 6 months time for the usual check up!

many thanks for all your responses to my query, and having noted your experiences and advice I shall submit myself to the dentist's chair tomorrow. Wish me luck! NB I've bought in solpadeine for the aftercare.

I wish you lots of luck with your treatment, - I found Paramol tablets to be better for dental pain than Solpadeine, stronger I think.
After previously having root canal work, both my husband and I ended up having the tooth out, so I would opt for extraction to begin with.

been to dentist, appt only lasted 20 minutes and PAINLESS, the affected tooth now has a temporary dressing in it to help drain the abscess and I have to return in 3 weeks for completion of t/ment. So it was nowhere near as bad as I'd thought!
