I am a bit superstitious, and I believe that when I see 1 magpie in the morning (1 for sorrow, 2 for joy etc) then I always end up having a pretty bad day.  If at the same time I see 2 magpies, then I know I'll have a fine day.

Am I a loony?

No, you are not a loony.   However, you may be affecting your day by resigning yourself to a type of day that you might otherwise be able to influence.  The same event viewed in different moods can produce very different results (see, I know it was going to be a bad day versus well it doesn't matter because it's going to be a fine day)

A superstitious friend salutes one magpie to ward off the sorrow.  Perhaps that might help?

Im not superstitious never have been I think its a load of nonsense personally,

and octavius yes you are loony -only joking if thats what you feel,  I think you make your own luck and wouldn't count on magpies telling me what sort of day I'm going to have!

One for sorrow. Two for joy. Three for a girl. Four for a boy. Five for silver. Six for gold. Seven for a secret never to be told. Eight's a wish. Nine's a kiss. Ten is a bird you must not miss. We have 2 magpies that fly around our area quite alot but i don't ever see them as putting aburden on my day if i just see one of them i do know the rhyme though which is pretty sad for a 21yr old but hey ho....

You are not a loony unless i am too!

I always salute 1 magpie and touch black. Supposedly stops the bad luck. (Strange little things that i do!)

I have a friend who says 'Good morning mr magpie' to every magpie she sees, now she is a loony!

I think most people are a bit superstitious, so let he who is without superstition, cast the first stone hehe. I could call you a loony, but then I never walk under ladders and I'm wary of Friday 13th. I think magpies and crows are evil anyway. Birds of satan.
Hey splodge, I say 'morning mr magpie' too. And if theres two, i'll say it twice...
Hey splodge24 and cardboard if i see one magpie i dont do anything but if i see two i say hello mr magpie hows your wife n kids point and then kiss the back of my hand!!! Am i obsessed or what!!?!?!

Cardboard, this too makes you a loony like my friend! She also says it depending on the amount of magpies!!

Wonky, i recommend psychiatric help!!! hee hee only joking...you too crazy for that even!

splodge24 its been said before!!!! i even have taugh my 3 yr old nephew to do for fear of his bad day!!! im an idiot!!

It's the three year old nephew i feel sorry for!

You are out of your tree, go tie yourself up in a straight jacket and sit in the corner...move away from the computer!

You are supposed to say "Goodmorning Mr Magpie and how are you today?" when you see a lone magpie.

I think the reason for the one for sorrow rhyme is because magpies mate for life. If you see a solitary magpie it usually means it has lost its mate. Sometimes on the motorways if a magpie gets run over its mate will hang around the body until it too gets squished by a juggernaut.

im laughing too much now to do my work!!! damn those magpies!!
Wonky i said move away from the computer...!!!
im laughing at splodge24's  answer not ursula62's answer.
i cant i have to use it for work ill get the sack!!

Blimey, wish I hadn't asked.  I thought I was an odd ball.  Some of the people on this site are scarey ...Wonky....Splodge24....

:o)

Wonky u r a crazy daisy. If you are working then why are you on AB? I think you need a break, go have a brew! Avoid winged creatures for a while also, i think they have a bad affect on you. You will get chapped lips in the winter if you spend too much time snogging the back of your hand everytime you see a few magpies! Strange, strange, strange!!
Octavius I'm not scary, just a bit wierd, it's Wonky that needs locking up. I only salute them, wonky has a full meeting with them!
I wasn't too superstitious until we went on holiday to Cyprus in 1994. My husband & I were waking along in the beautiful sunshine when I saw one Magpie. I automatically said "Oh I hope that's not an omen" & carried on walking. When we got back to the hotel, there was a note under the door saying 'urgent - phone home'. I did this, only to be told that my Dad had just died. It's something that will always stay with me.
Oh & I always salute & say "Good morning Captain" or whatever time of day it is. It really is very silly, as it's obviously just another old wives tale I'm sure!
