Folded or Crossed Arms

I notice some women walk about with their arms folded across their chest. What is this a signal of?

Could be feeling cold.
Trying to hide a part of their body they feel self-conscious about.
Feel the need to be defensive.
Putting up a barrier.
Hiding a stain on their clothing.

Possibly it's a sign that they should have worn a warmer sweater?

That might sound a rather facetious answer but I often find that I'm walking down the street with my arms folded - I'm a fella! - and I've tried to work out why I do it. Apart from it being a response to feeling rather chilly on occasions, I've never worked out a reason!

I do it if I'm cold but used to do it a lot before I lost loads of weight as I was very self conscious of my big chest

I do either because I;m cold or I walk along and start thinking how my arms are moving when I walk and then I have to fold them just to stop them looking silly. But I do feel a bit standoffish

I understand the logic about the body language and it being a barrier, but i do it simply because it's comfortable and yes sometimes because i'm self concious of the dangly arm thing too! It's very rare that i actually mean it to be a barrier and now it even sometimes worries me that that's what someone thinks i mean!

also if I;m wearing short sleeves I dont like my fat elbows :-) so folding gets rid of them :-)

usually of fishwives or more recently of the trailer trash jeremy kyle type that hangs on street corners telling folk about the dna results of their 3rd kid.whilst bestowing the benefits of a 42inch high definition telly for watching loose women.

Lack of pockets in women's clothing. Men put their hands in their pockets so they don't have swinging arms, women can't so they fold their arms.
