Hair Straightening...

Recently when I straighten my hair it gets really greasy, especially at the back. My hair was totally clean before as I'd just washed it and I have decent straighteners that are pure ceramic, not ceramic coated. This never used to happen before and doesn't happen to my sister who has the same irons although she has wavy hair and mine is fairly straight but it has lots of kinks at the ends. Can anybody shed any light because I want to straighten my hair because I'm going out at the weekend and I'm scared that my hair will go all greasy and horrible again. Please help! This never used to happen when I first bought the straighteners but I don't use them very often.

It could be that hair products have stuck to the irons and may need cleaning. Try running a damp cloth or towel between the straighteners whilst they are switched on to clean the plates.
Also are you using a greasy/oily product before straightening? As I have found this sometimes make hair go a bit unmanageable, depending on what products you use.
is your hair ever-so slighlty moist? this makes my hair go greasy when i use straighteners

Thanks for all your answers:

Casey - Will try cleaning them but shouldn't I turn them off before I clean them cause wouldn't having them on electrocute me(!!?) & not using any hair products, I don't even use a heat protection spray, I tried the Lee Stafford one which is apparently really good & only used a tiny bit and it made my hair greasy! The same happened with the Loreal Hot Straight (the one with Beyonce in the advert) It's beginning to really annoy me and as well as being greasy it's probably damaging my hair!

montyy - I'm not to sure about it being ever so slightly moist, I blow dried it after I washed it and it felt dry but maybe that was the problem, how long do you suggest waiting after blow drying/ it feeling dry after you've let it dry naturally before I straighten it?

Please Still keep you advice coming!

I have the same problem, my hair is also quite straight but with kinks at the ends so i tend to firstly blow dry it so it's fairly dry, although it can still be quite damp when i straighten it, i use ceramic straighteners and i was finding that my hair looked quite greasy after straightening.  I was'nt using a heat protector so decided to invest in the GHD iron oil... quite pricey at 13 a bottle, i wish i had'nt have bothered, it made my hair so greasy and the smell was'nt too nice either.  My hairdresser then told me about Tigi Catwalk, a heat protector spray called Fashionista which smells gorgeous! i spray it on before blow drying but try not to use too much on the roots as i've found it just looks more greasy, also i try and use the straighteners just on the ends of my hair where the kinks are, if you've already blow dried the roots straight theres no need to make them greasy by straightening them and also blow drying them will give your hair a bit of volume rather than that stuck to the head look! hope this helps??!!

Hi moosa, no it is fine if you run a damp cloth or towel between the plates, a hairdresser advised me to do this. Try buying Reken Extreme Anti Snap leave in treatment, this protects your hair and it smells gorgeous!! It is also not greasy in the slightest! It is a little pricey but lasts for a long long time. Maybe try changing your shampoo? This may also be part of the problem.
try using neutrogena clean shampoo & conditioner and rinse it out thouroughly to make sure your hair is completely free from products. dont comb your hair or touch it too much, as this can also cause greasiness. let your hair dry naturally for a while until it is nearly dry, then blow dry it so it is completely dry, but again dont comb it, or touch it too much. once it is completely dry straighten it in sections and make sure your straightener is really hot before you start.
it sounds like you are using to much shampoo. what are you using? did you know it is better to wash your hair twice with a 10p size of shampoo then to put a 50p size on to do 1 shampoo!!! by over loading you hair with shampoo then you are not cleaning at all.  is your hair fine??
it may be that the newly straightened hair reflects light more cos it is so nice and shiny, so hair appears greasy earlier than if it was not straightened and slightly frizzier.  Not sure if there is anything you can do if this is the case. of course if you don't actually straighten near the scalp this probably is a load of tosh!
