swine flu at my son's school
19 Answers
he's 15.
I know that he will already have been in contact with the virus already, and not much point in keeping him off, but my mum is COPD and I'm worried he could pass something on.
Should I keep him off for the last week?

there's swine flu in my kids' school, too. my daughter (there's a swine flu case in her class in her class!) has just come back from her friend's house, and her mother is also suspected of having it :o/
it seems hard to avoid completely.

My friend has COPD, and if he ever came into contact with Swine Flu, it would finish him off.
He has widespread emphysema, and so any little throat infection, passed from someone with whom he has contact, can go straight to his lungs and exacerbate his condition.
My advice is to keep your son away from your mother if he develops any flu-like symptoms, no matter how mild they seem.

Oh for goodness sake, its only flu, i do wish people would stop over reacting and panicking, yes I understand concerns, but like any flu virus if your gonna get it so be it, nothing you can do, really no point in keepign brood away from school and wrapping all unsundry in cotton wool. Yes people have died, but they have had underlying illnesses...he is 15 not a baby. People really do waste the time of their GPs over this....the media have just hyped it all up and created panick..for nothing...its like new mums with their precious bundles always in the doc's surgery over the slightest thing....get a grip!
they don't all have underlying health problems, though most do. That doesn't prove swine flu wasn't the cause of death.

Yes, you can keep him away from your mum. I would, in the meantime at least. Off school? That's up to you. I probably wouldn't, but your call.

Redrum - in the last 48 hours, both a child and a GP, neither of whom had underlying health problems, have both died after contracting SwineFlu. The OP is asking what sort of precautionary measures she can take to prevent her mother getting exposed to the virus, which, with her condition, would surely finish her off. I don't think it was anything to do with wanting to wrap her son in cotton wool.
If you have a serious health condition or a relative with a serious health condition you have a right to be concerned.I have not really paid much attention to swine flu so far,but now it is in my area of the country I am going to take the same precautions that I would take to avoid any other infection.
Swine flu could kill me and I really am not ready to die yet. My 11 year old son would miss me!

I am a caretaker at our school and we have just had a case confirmed, however we aren't under any instructions to close or anything as yet, the pupils finnish for the summer hols on Friday so I reckon that is when it will more than likely spread. Though I am a little concerned because i am on medication that zaps the immune system, I have decided that I will just carry on and hope i don't get it.
School will be bottomed during hols so there's plenty to keep us occupied..... Yes, unlike many we do still have to go to work...
