How is E.coli caught from a live animal? I thought you caught it from eating infected food but obvioulsy the recent outbreak at Godstone Farm wasn't caused by that.

But E.coli is a gut bacteria,how does it get onto the animal's fur in the first place unless they are living in filthy pens?and why weren't the children made to wash their hands after touching the animals?
Surely a petting zoo should know that it is important to teach the visitors these simple hygiene matters.

daffy....animals crap, do not wipe their bottoms or wash their paws afterwards and B.coli gets into the fur around their @rse and then rubbing up against their mates, transmit the bacillus.

One of the Mum's of a very ill child was on News24 earlier.

She said her child hardly touched any animals, and they ensured he washed his hands carefully after.

My wife and I have often taken our grandchildren to children's farms, as many other people do, and have never heard of children getting e-coli from touching animals. Surely this would be a common occurrence at farms all over the country, so why only one in particular?
