Morbidly Obese man to cost taxpayer £90,000 for trip to hospital

Would you object to taxpayers money being used to try to save this mans life? Can he change his ways - or is the operation too risky to undertake?

It isn't as easy as that.
Having watched a family member go through an eating addiction and the effect it has had on them and those around them , I am possibly getting too wound up over this discussion. We all have our opinions and I respect that and I will leave you to it. x x

ummmm...although I do not have the full facts of the case, there must have been a time when he was normal weight and his problem has developed over the years in full view of his parents who encouraged this "gorging2 of food.

As I say, I don't know the case, but I bet that he was of low IQ, couldn't or wouldn't work and sat around the house all day. How could his parents afford to feed him? Presumably staying at home, eating, playing with his play station was a good option until he found lying in bed a much better deal and food was brought to his bed.

All this was legitimised by a name bring placed on his disorder and this completed the picture.

This could have been avoided by his parents saying...." go out and get some exercise you fat git"

Aside from the huge expense just to get this (lard) man to hospital... Imagine.. you want fertility treatment on the NHS and have been refused.. or need breast cancer drugs and your PCT wont give them to you for free....
The Pct has a responsibility to spend their budget wisely.. and they do have to consider if £90,000 on transport alone (if this figure is to be believed by the article) PLUS the operation (which easily run into tens of thousands) plus the after care this man will need.....

I think that the real reason he is like this is down the the parenting.. Daffy could be right! Maybe mum was a feeder and didnt want her child to ever leave home....

I even know someone who is overfeeding her kids.... rather than give them proper love - she feeds and feeds and feeds them.... and they are both young girls being bullied who are clinically obese!
Education is needed!!!!

and to quote the article.. he was putting on weight at a rate of 1 stoner PER MONTH for the last two years! Hell thats a lot of food!!!!
(How did his mum afford all that food on a pension??? or do his disability benefits pay for it???) another topic for discussion some other time I think!!!

just a a VERY QUICK read of all the responses....

In my opinion this could quite easilly be a MENTAL HEATH Problem...(after all who would subject their body to that sort of abuse)...and the NHS does cover mental health so YES - I think he should be treated.
Incidentally - my husband and i had this discussion last night - my hub has the opposite opinion to me.
