What are the best shoes for icy weather?

I don't drive and walk on average 5 or more miles a day to work, shopping etc.

I need some good gripping shoes that aren't heavy to walk safely on snow and ice. Any ideas gratefully received.

Unless you're going somewhere with the conditions of Siberia then I'd suggest Dr. Martens or Caterpillar boots. Yes they do feel slighty heavy when you carry them in your hands but they are extremely comfortable on your feet.

For me, the most effective, comfortable and value for money were a pair of ex-army paratrooper's boots I bought in an army suprlus store.  To buy new I'm sure they'd be the best part of �100 but I bought a pair for �18.50.  They're designed, obviously, to do one hell of a tough job but they're suprisingly light, well looked after and they're already broken in.  With one pair of cushion insoles and one pair of fur, I can walk forever in them.

check out LLBEAN on the internet...they got some really good shoes for the harsh weather conditions...got a kind of grip on the sole excellent for snowy and icy conditions....look a bit strange though....

there are lots of active trainer/boot type things that have good soles and have goretex or similar lining.

Brasher, Merrell, Regatta. visit your local outdoors store or get a copy of Trail from WHS for ideas.
