I know this sounds harsh but if you need time off every year for stress then i think doctors should have an obligation to look after patients and recommend to the employees that their role be changed otherwise it amounts to self-inflicted stress. This would stop both cases of stress resurfacing and freeloaders would then have to think carefully about their career. You could also say that for further appointments you need to have "demonstrated an ability to deal with high stress" so to stop those more at risk from being put in positions they are simply unable to handle. Unfair? no, it may not be equal opps or PC but neither is taking time off because you can't actually handle, and thus DO, your job - leaving people behind to carry you and in turn putting undue stress on them and their jobs (risking a career of another for selfish advancement). It's a shame more peole don't hold their hands up and say "yeah, thought it was for me but I just seem to be a different person to that which you need." not shameful to admit that, it takes character.
Perhaps firms should be harder on absences and work closer with staff to ensure they get the correct jobs. Weekend's away on adventure training would highlight someones character - they do it for recruitment and so why not for advancement?
Our work benefits from being very relaxed, little pressure and no pettiness. Work is hard and sometimes stressful but no added burdens mean it's a great place to work.
Our Manager has had probably as much time off sick as she has been in this year. Came back off hols, went sick, came in for two days, off again. etc etc. Never off for longer than a week so never needs a doctors note. Or comes in and complains about feeling unwell, cries for 10 mins and then goes home again!
The only good thing to come from this is that she can't really say anthing to any of us about having time off work sick....
