I'm starting to come down with a cold and I'm really looking forward to it ;)

A work college just told me about an alternative way of clearing it up and I wanted to see if anyone else had heard of this before.

He said that I should go to Tescos and get some 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution and put a few drop in each ear and leave for 10 mins before washing out. He claims that the virus lives in your ear cavity and this method addresses the cause rather than treating the symptoms.

Has anyone else heard of this?

if i was you i would tell your friend they are having a laugh,,putting peroxide in your ears is dangerouse,,,if you have a cold then go to the chemist and buy proper cold remedys available over the counter,,,if you often get colds then start taking echinacea to boost your immune system,,,gypsy
There is a reason the common cold is scientifically a rhinovirus (from the Greek rhin meaning nose).  The numerous viruses responsible for colds reside within the nasal/throat systems.  One can aggresively treat a cold with many different over the counter (OTC) remedies and the cold will last about a week and a half, or one can use aspirin and plenty of liquids and the cold will last about 10 days... best of luck!

Thanks guys. For the sake of half a day, I'll take the liquids approach.

What about sweating it out? i.e. double whiskey, then off to bed in a jumper?

Don't put peroxide in your ear! But going to bed early with a small whisky (with hot water and a slice of lemon) and keeping warm all help make you feel more comfortble.
whenever I feel the start of a cold coming on, I take 6 Echinachea tablets a day and if it does develop, it doesn't last for as long as it would have if I hadn't taken the Echinachea. They are not cheap at 7.50 for a bottle of 120 tablets, but worth it to not feel lousy for over a week. BTW you can get different brands of Echinachea, but I only ever use Bioforce
At the first sign of a cold my husband swears by taking zinc and vitamin c (1000mg).  He's not had a cold in 3 years now.
the possibility of going deaf doesnt sound too good, dont listen to anyone with a "magic cure". if you can find it, use ZICAM nasal spray as soon as you feel the cold comming. the stuff is by far the best stuff ive ever seen in my life for a cold. well worth the price. I know its here in the USA but im not too sure about anywhere else.

I would say keep your fluids up, wear lots of layers and sleep/ sweat it out.

I find as well, although I haven't had a cold for a few years, that I feel better by taking one day off work and going back feeling better and rested up than trying to work through it and spending a week at work feeling like poo and sneezing over everyone.
