tiny cervix - what would cause this?

i went for a smear the other week, and the nurse said she was having trouble locating my cervix...she said it was the size of a pin head! and could hardly see it...

she said it was likely hormonal (i have PCOS) an didnt seem to think i needed any treatment or to see the doc...but what is this? why ? and what possible problems could i cause?

I stand to be corrected here, but I know of no studies which link PCOS with an abnormal cervix.

I would guess that your cervix is perfectly normal, but the nurse was referring to the fact that your uterus was retroverted (lying backwards), making the cervix in an abnormal position and hence the opening to the cervix difficult to find. This would make the taking of a cervical smear more difficult, a situation not that uncommon.

thanks, but no, she said the opening was i the right place but the size of a pinhead - so small she had trouble seeing it...she maybe thought herself that it was in the wrong position a was looking around, until she realised it was just very small...to my knowledge my uterus is in a normal position - im 38 and ive had many scans and exams and smears etc - an even felt it myself, an never been told it is in the wrong position or small or in fact anything at all..

i also have never heard of this with pcos...but she said it is probably because of my hormones.

surely though if its this small it would cause me problems...i rarely have periods but often have the pains...perhaps its stopping the blood comin out properly...? i mentioned that to her an she said 'yeh probably'.

or is it perhaps just temporary?...perhaps it just shrinks then goes normal again...as it would giving birth...?

Clearly it is not permanent as you have had smears and vaginal examinations before, without professional comment.

I have researched the journals and apparently it has been reported that the opening to the cervix can, in certain circumstances become of "pinhole" size.

I would suggest you seek Gynaecological opinion.

i meant could this sort of thing happen regularly...or could it now be a permanent change.

i will of course seek advice from a proper doctor...but thought id ask here first...you could say that to most people on here...

I think that, sometimes, the doctors and nurses could try and explain things a bit better.

Well apparently, the opening becomes smaller in the pre.ovulatory stage which would suggest that it was not permanent but intermittent and hormonal.
