Based on what you describe, it sounds like he is experiencing olfactory hallucination or "phantom smells". The smell of something burning is very common with this phenomenon.

It can be an indication that something is 'going on' in your brain.................make an appointment and ask your GP.
Sometimes blood in your nasal passages gives off a peculier smell.
Do you have an unusual taste in your mouth too?
When I used to ride horses regularly, and then not go for a while, I'd often have the smell of the stables lingering in my nostrils for days, even though we lived nowhere near the place.

Likewise, I once did a short work experience stint in the butchery department of a supermarket. I spent a lot of time pre-packing meat. Fine for a short time, but after three days the smell really gets up your nose. I was smelling it for weeks afterwards and couldn't stand the sight or smell of mince for months.
Have you started any new tablets? My husband had an op a while back and had to start a new regimen of meds, and for a couple of weeks he said everything smelled burnt - given the amount of tablets he was on, we don't know which one did it though.

Almost certainly "no big deal"

See yr GP re. referral to an ENT surgeon to exclude sinus disease or some infection in the nose.
Like saxy jag, I did a tour around a cheese making dairy and could smell it for weeks afterwards.
