opinions on vintage fur
35 Answers
I was recently given a 1950/1960s vintage Black Rabbit fur coat. I think it's beautiful, but I am unsure whether I will be viewed negatively because it is real? I feel that vintage fur is very different to new fur, as the people in the 1950s were ignorant to the cruelty that it took to get the fur, and it was completely accepted. What do you think?

I wore it in a totally uncoventional way through my teens (with jeans and a wide leather belt etc) and it was much admired, but I soon began to feel uncomfortable and it was sadly consigned to a charity in the 70`s.Mine was much older but I think that people have always known that killing for fur is cruel especially in the last century or so.
Its your choice.

The animals are already dead so throwing it away now is not going to prove anything, back in the 50s the whole of the animal would have been used for food and other things so I dont see a problem with it. I don't agree with killing an animal just for a small part like its fur or tusks etc but if an animal is killed and completely used then I think thats fine. Most of us eat meat and wear leather shoes so whats the diference.
Be very careful when wearing old rabbit fur coats as they can carry diseases from the treatments used when it was made.
If after a while when you've been wearing it you start to put your shoes on the wrong feet, then you should go to the doctors and tell him you think you may have caught mix-amy-toeseys

Choc it's easier to be super PC if you're not in the position of having to make a choice, Presumably previous posters don't eat veal, pate de fois gras, cheap eggs and chicken either , ,,, the list could go on and on. I recently had to throw away my late mothers mink coat (that had been her absolute pride and joy and cost a bomb many years ago) because the charity shops wouldn't take it, I still feel guilty about it. Make your own choice about your coat. Rabbit fur is a bit different to farmed furs because they are a food source anyway.
I agree prudie, it is a french coat, and therefore I know that they would've eaten the rabbit meat along with using the fur to make coats. People have worn fur since the pre-historic times, why is it so different now? And as you say, everyone else must have never worn leather and have been a vegan all their lives or never accidently hit an animal while driving. Probably all of their ancestors would of also worn fur.
