Savlon Disinfectant
2 Answers
I mistakenly bought a bottle of Savlon Disinfectant (Orange Coloured bottle) to use as an antiseptic first aid solution. It turns out that the bottle gives dilutions for use in toilets, sinks and drains etc but nothing about dilutions for use on the skin.
Now a few years back, he orange solution could be used as an antiseptic and disinfectant and contained chlorhexhidine and cetrimide. The new orange stuff contains benzalkonium chloride and some other additives and is more viscous. The antiseptic version now comes in a blue bottle and is marked for first-aid use.
What I'd like to know is if there is any reason why I can't use the one I bought mistakenly as a skin antiseptic? What would be the right dilution? The reason I ask is that t benzalkonium chloride was once marketed as the active ingredient in Dettol Fresh Antiseptic.
Thank you

The normal Savlon antiseptic is very good as it doesn't sting and can therefore be used on children and animals.
I would suggest that you leave the disinfectant for the toilet and buy some proper Savlon antiseptic.
