Electro Acupuncture and DC/AC current??

Hi, i am doing a course on this and have lost myself a bit with all the circuit work etc.
Why is AC current used for this and not DC? Have searched on the net and it says DC can be used but not recommended. Anyone who practices this got any advice for me, thanks
