Why are our noses divided into 2 nostrils? I appreciate that we hear and see with 2 ears / eyes, because the stereo images received give us a sense of position and distance - but there would seem to be no need to smell in stereo. Isn't one nostril enough?

I was thinking that but loads of people have both nostrils blocked.

you only breath out of one nostril at a time though, it changes side every 20 seconds
when one is blocked, you can use t'other
