Why do I get a runny/blocked nose

I've got a real stinker of a cold at the moment. My nose is blocked,sometimes just the right nostril, sometimes just the left and you guessed it sometimes both!

My question is, why is my nose blocked up. Where does this 'stuff' come from, what is it made up of and what purpose, if any, does it serve?

You got me thinking too, and as I didn't know either, I did a 'Google' and came up with this site Blocked-noses and this one NHS-direct-catarrh .

Thanks! Job done. Now I just hope my nose gets back to normal soon, this cold's doing my head in. lol.
