Non smoking flights

A mate of mine is flying to Florida for his summer holiday and whilst we were discussing it, he said the worst bit (for him) was not having a fag for 8 - 9 hours. I suggested he used one of those nicotine patches, just to keep him 'supplied' with nicotine during the flight. Does anyone know if this would work, or even tried it themselves?

Just remind him to remove it before he lights up otherwsie he will get a double dosage of nicotine

Wouldn't it be easier for him to ask his GP for a sleeping tablet & just sleep through whole journey? :0)

The patch would satisfy the nicotine addiction, but would do nothing at all for the habit part of smoking.  He would sit there with fists clenched and teeth grinding, thinking all the time, "I want a cigarette".  He hasn't even got willpower to use against it like someone who wants to stop smoking.  He could use an inhalator - a dummy cigarette with a menthol cartridge in it - but he's still going to be screaming up the wall on arrival, and then through the interminable US arrival procedures!

 

The good news is that you can buy patches, gum and inhalators over the counter.

yikes,,he might be flippen you cant smoke in the airport at all in the US.  I flew quite a few times from Germany to the states and back,,what a relief getting off a plane in Germany cause they have ashtrays everywhere even before you go through customs.

I would say however he might just be ok on the flight part of it, as I said I have done it many times, Im a pack a day smoker.  Honestly a cigg is the furthest thing from my mind that high in the air.  I do just fine, but as soon as we land I become over excited (cause we landed) and then immediatly need a smoke.  Customs seemed a bit longer once in the states, probably just because you cant smoke b4.. Once hes off though he can go through customs and dash out the door (once hes got his luggage) and smoke away.

I would go with the fake smokes,,like recommened above though if he really thinks he will be stressing, and definatly something to keep his hands busy, even if its just a handheld video game or writing a letter.  The patch didn't do a thing for me when I tried to quit, cept make me sick when I reached for the smoke,,not pleasant.

I had a mate who was a a heavy smoker and who used to satisfy his addiction on long-haul flights to the US by taking snuff. He used to say this had the dual benefit of not only satisfying his cravings but also shocking americans who thought he was snorting coke!

well i know exactly how your friend feels, i travelled to kenya abt 3 weeks back and i had the nicorette gum, it really helped.

he should try is, no harm in that.

No GP in their right mind will prescribe sleeping tablets for someone who wishes to avoid nicotine withdrawl on a plane.

Tell me about it! My husband and I flew to Las Vegas last year, which involved a 7 hr flight from Birmingham UK to Newark, 2 hours in a no-smoking airport terminal (we didn't realise you can go outside to smoke), and then 5 hours from Newark to Las Vegas. Throughout the journey my husband was getting increasingly bad tempered, and was drinking to replace having a cigarette. He also kept saying "I don't need a fag" very loudly, and I had to keep reminding him that whilst we know fag as a slang term for a cigarette, it has a different meaning in the US. As soon as we landed in Vegas, he went to a smoking area, but the effects of having had no cigarettes for 14 hours, combined with lots of beer caused him to promptly pass out. The paramedic who sorted him out was a lovely looking chap though!!!
