hi,

i'm due to give blood after work and when filling out the health check form i noticed it asks 'have you had an operation since your last donation?'.

in december i had a wisdom tooth taken out under local anaesthetic. does this count as an operation?

i could ask when i get there, but if i can find out beforehand it saves me the trip down there!

Personally, if you had anaesthetic, it might be best to  answer:

Yes - Wisdom Tooth removed under anaesthetic.

oh, i know that. obviously, i'm going to mention it, but i thought if someone posted the answer 'they won't take blood from you if you had a wisdom tooth out - it happened to me', then i don't need to go to the effort of trekking all the way down there and sitting around for an hour, just to be told to go home.

however, if someone says 'this happened to me and it wasn't a problem' then i'll still go.

does anyone know? has this happened to you?

Oh sorry secretsquiz - I thought you just meant whether or not to mention it on the form. I've had a 'few' operations, but have still been able to give blood. Hope that helps.
I think its coz you cant give blood if you've had an operation and needed a blood transfusion in the last 20years or something. My mam gave blood for years and had to stop last year coz she had a transfusion in 1987. Its something to do with CJD

thanks, smudge. i guess i wasn't clear enough in my original post.

and snappy, i know what you mean, but that's covered by other questions. i think it's so they know whether you've potentially picked anything up in surgery.

i'm gonna go anyway and see what they say. it'll be a shame if i can't donate as i was meant to do it a couple of months ago and this is the first time i've been able to get to a donation session.

thanks.

I expect I'm too late to answer your Q but I wanted to say that I hope you were successful or can donate blood at sometime in the future.  Without people like you I wouldn't be here, thank you. x

Hi secretsquiz - Just thought I'd let you know that I went to give blood last week & guess what - I was turned down because I was anaemic!
