Acid reflux

For the past week or so, I've suffered a lot in the evenings with the lovely burning throat! I took a ranitidine last night which eased it slightly but didn't get rid of it completely.
Is it worth buying some gaviscon? What is the best thing to take? Also, I was just wondering whether the acid causes any harm/damages your throat or gullet?
Thanks

I can see no reason why you should not try an antacid like Gaviscon.
Acid reflux is a symptom not a diagnosis, if it persists for more than 4 weeks then go to your Dr.
It will not damage you throat if it is treated successfully.
it can eat away at the back of your teeth - my dentist says I must have had it for years without realising, as he can see where the damage has been done.
I get it occassionally. Funnily enough it comes for a while and then goes again.
Might be down to diet. Or maybe the "valve" that is supposed to keep the stuff in your stomach is becoming weaker, I think it can with age.

Is it worse when you lie down ?

Any antacid should help. I've tried Gaviscon, but a while ago now. As I recall it's was good but I wasn't keen on the taste :-)
I used to suffer with this, My doc put me on Lanzoprozale noo prob now.

jem.

Thanks all for your answers. Yes, it is worse when I lie down and I think bread makes it worse so I will not be eating it this week :(

I used to get it terribly a few years ago if I ever drank white wine but that's understandable.

Think I will buy some Gaviscon today because it kept me awake. Think Zantacs are better for indigestion, not the burning throat.
I get acid indegestion - I used to use gaviscon at the beginning but was getting through sooo much of it, didn't work in the end (don't get me wrong - it's VERY good for mild attacts) My GP put me on Pantoprazole - marvelous stuff - tablets - works a treat. So yes I recommend gaviscon but if it gets worse and more painful see your GP.
I take Omeprazole which has done the job very succesfully for years.
omeprazole can be bought without a prescripyion now! boots do their own version for 7.99
Omeprazole from the GP is great. From the first tablet I took, I have never suffered since. Hope it gets better soon.
omeprazole used to be known as losec,i take it cause i have two hernias and causes acid reflux, great stuff
For what it's worth, Tesco's sell a "Heartburn and Indigestion" liquid which, as far as I can see, is identical to the Gaviscon formula, but a damn site cheaper.
I used to have reflux problems when laying down but now have a good nights sleep. The Aniseed flavour is quite nice and better than Rennies.
Gaviscon is really good. I always keep a bottle handy. Although I do now take 2 omeprazole from the doctors. Get it checked out. Mine turned out to be acid reflux and hiitus hernia.

Thanks all for your replies and advice. If it continues, I'll def go to the docs and get some of those tablets because it's painful and annoying.
I have acid reflux as well. changing your diet really helps. Well, it's not easy for me to change my diet but, still i have to do it. Like you, i feel the same on my throat, it really hurts. I do a research about it and found that article. Dr Mercola's article really make me understand what acid reflux is. I hope it could help you as well. Description: acid reflux
I have a haitus hernia, which gives me reflux, and Omaprazole (sp?) from my GP sorts it out fine.

Try not eating in the last hour or two before you go to bed. have a glass of milk last thing, and sleep on an extra pillow to keep your head elevated - all will help alleaviate your symptoms.
my friend has it quite badly but it has been remedied very much by a tablet she gets prescribed from her doctor. Sorry dont know the name
I also take omeprazol, and it's fine until I eat a curry then I can wake up choking in the night, on the reflux, really frightening and makes the throat sore!
