i have a mate who has chrohns disease and he does suffer with it - forever boring the pants of everyone with his tales of woe ( dont get me wrong i know its serious, but he never stops moaning)
having said that, he spends all his time in the pub, so he is not housebound etc

i have no problem wiht him getting help with mobility and getting a car because of this...

but they give him a choice - an he ends up with bmws and merc etc...very nice, new, modern cars...

how is this possible? and why wouldnt they just give him a micra or fiesta or something?

is there some other thing hes getting these from? he shows off a bit too

i just dotn get it (dont like to ask because dont want to seem like i am against it)

thanks

My brother in law died from chrohns, and didnt get any help..
he would get a car if he is entitled to the higher rate of the mobility component of DLA, with an award of at least 3 years.

he would then get a brochure telling him which car he can get for just the rate of his DLA, and which "higher end" car he can get if he's prepared to stump up the extra money.

trust me, it's pretty basic cars unless you put extra money in.
if they are all disability cars then I dont know why he is bragging, they are not his they are leased, he will have a mileage to adhere to and he wont be allowed to "mess" the car up in any way.

chrones disease is debilitating, I am sure he would prefer being in good health than driving a nice car..I know I would
A mate of mine has got Chrohns disease and he says last place he should be is in the pub.

ahh i see...maybe hes puts the rest in somehow the...perhaps the parents...

he implies they have just given him a top of the range car!

as i said i know he suffers so he needs wheels...but just seems a pointless extravagance really...
if he is drinking alclhol he is negating his medication (if that is the right word) a girl of 19 that worked for me was diagnosed with the condition 4 years ago and she has been through hell.
he probably does not have much of a life if he is badly effected, I wouldnt begrudge him a fancy car, its not his but if he gets some joy out of using it for 3 years then so what.

yes but the money they spend on that could be put to better use to help others elsewhere dont you think? its unnecessary. any car would get him from a to b...

as i said he spends most of his time in the pub so is hardly housebound or sad...
the extra money will come out of the benefits that he has been awarded, it wont be extra money drafted in for him.
it comes down to how people live their lives joko. just because he spends a lot of time at the pub does not mean he is happy with his lot. I am sure he would give it all up if he could be cured of chrone's

money is meaningless over health in my opinion

cazzzz...i dont need a lecture about how bad crohns is...i am aware of thatm and i am not trying to say he doesnt deserve any help either!

you are missing the point i am making completely...try reading the post properly
you sound a little upset that he has a flash car

obviously to get his flash car (and your bp up) he pays a little extra from his disability living allowance.
I've a motability car, a Focus Zetec TDCI estate for which I had to pay an extra £1000 up front as sara says if he's getting a Merc or a BMW he or somebody has got to be making a fairly hefty up front payment
Question Author
mmm...yeh good one...given that i drive any old car and i couldnt care less what it is, i rather think your barking up the wrong tree with that one - good try though, lazy, but good....

anyway its a simple question - do you think the government should dish out top notch cars to people because they have a serious ailment?
or should they just give them a decent car that works and spend that money elsewhere?

actually, i have an serious ailment too, maybe i should get one too eh?
anyway its a simple question - do you think the government should dish out top notch cars to people because they have a serious ailment?

what he chooses to spend his DLA on is his business..
I forgot to add that he will have to surrender the Motability component of his DLA which is nearly £50/week
joko, if you're entitled you should do it, but you will lose your DLA. no one gets the higher end cars unless they pay the extra money themselves, as I've already said.

I think the Motability scheme is a charitable organisation, but you can check for yourself here.. http://www.motability.co.uk/main.cfm?Type=IDX
http://www.motability.co.uk/main.cfm?Type=AUP

it's a charity, so your tax payer's money is safe!

unless you contribute to the charity, of course. and you are a tax payer, of course, lol!
Just had a quick look on the Motability site and for a series 3 BMW the up front payment is £2000 to £6000 dependant on which model you go for, didn't look at Mercs but this will give you a range to work from
That's ridiculous! My mum has Crohns and does suffer badly (she's had ops and an illeostomy bag at one point), but she doesn't NEED a car and doesnt get a disability allowance for one either. When you have an episode with Crohns, you aint getting off the toilet let alone in a car! Then when it's ok, it's ok, you can walk, get a bus etc. Crazy government.
