What percentage of people die before they are 30? Or 40?

I've wondered how many people I went to school with are no longer alive. I'm in my 30s, I knew about 100 kids in my year.

(i.e.counting deaths from birth would count people who would have been in your school year group if they'd not died within the first few days or weeks of their life, whereas you're only interested in the number of people who might have died since leaving school).
These figures might be more useful:
The estimated number of 15 to 34 year old people in England and Wales last year was 14,386,900. The number of 15 to 34 year old people who died in England and Wales last year was 7025. That indicates that, every year, about one person in every 2000 out of that age group dies. Since it's a 20 year period, that means that about 20 people out of every 2000 will die throughout that period, i.e. 1%
So, statistically, you'd expect just one person from your school peer group of 100 people to have died since you left school.

in 2007 my daughter lost 4 friends within 10 months, in 2008 it was slightly better, just 2 , in 2009 it was only 1 but so far this year it is 3. She's been to more funerals in her 25 years than I have been in my life. It's taken it's toll on her and her friends as they all knew one another and so they all went to the same funerals.

why have so many young people died that my daughter knew? Probably because it;'s a village and she will have been through school with them, known them from High School etc. It's not 'chance' it's damn bad luck. 2 were suicides, 1 was a motorbike accident, one was a car accident, one was as a result of infuries from a car accident, three were anuerisms(sp), all were sudden and unexpected, actually now I think about it I know of 4 young people that died tragically in the village whilst my kids were at school, i guess it's all about where you live and how many people you know.
one of my fellow pupils went mountaineering before going on to uni and was killed in a fall. One I think died of something druggy about 10 years later. But to the best of my knowledge everyone else is still going strong more than 40 years later. (This is just one class of 40-odd, not a whole year group.)
I went to my high school reunion the year most of us turned forty. Of the 200 or so students in our year, three were known to have died.
Now it gets freaky. All three had the same first name, Glen. No other students in the year were named Glen.
Freakier still. Two of them shared the same surname, Roberts. Anyone else know a Glen Roberts born in 1959? Are they still alive?

Just after he left school, one of my schoolmates was murdered in Turkey. This was 1966 and he was camping in a remote part with his girlfriend when bandits attacked them - he went outside to see what was going on and they shot him. I still belong to the old school network and I don't recall hearing yet that any of my year are no longer with us - but that is unlikely to be the case, on the balance of probability.
