i was watching one of those old comedies, some mothers do av em, on tv the other day - and in this episode - the doctor tells frank to pull his trousers down, whist he grabs his tesitcles, and asks him to cough!

ive heard of this before - why did they used to do this? i cant see how you could tell anything about anyone from doing this!

The 'cough and drop' test is still part of a routine medical examination for men. The last time I encountered it was in 2001 when I had my medical for working with a rail company (which lasted several hours). They used the services of a specialist medical centre which normally provides detailed medical tests for those working on oil rigs. They'd got all of the latest technology but 'cough and drop' was still included.

I must be showing my age now - we usually had the c & d at school medicals when I 2was in my teens, and as advised, it is a common and still practical method of checking for the reflex action, and feeling for tumours etc.

They had them at my school too, I remember all the boys lining up to go in

It.s a bloody useless test.

The only function maybe as annieasquith said......hernias or maldescended testicles.

Prison staff use a 'squat and cough' test to ascertain if anyone has contraband stashed internally. A blade will do some serious damage if the squat and cough is applied.

Sorry to lower the tone of these posts but I feel duty bound to tell you that when I was in the R.A.F many years ago, a story was told by one of my buddies that he was having the test & when the M.O said cough he thought he said off & he was half way out of the room before the doc loosed 'em.
