What kind of things can I say to that guy, that won't make me look silly if it turns out he just wants to be friends?

molly we have given you loads of ideas on the CB thread - you need to ask him. Outright. "Would you like to go out with me or would you prefer just to be mates?" takes courage but you can do it.

Thats a good one scotman. Do you go to McDonalds or KFC or anywhere like that Molly. Could you think of a way to get him to go out for a chat with a few friends to start off with.

Why not start out asking what kind of music/book/films he likes and can he recommend anything? That way you can find out if you have similar tastes and you can arrange to meet up to borrow some stuff or suggest you go see a film together etc. Show an interest in his likes and dislikes, people like it when someone is genuinely interested in their opinions.
