can you hear yours just going about their daily business, I dont mean loud music, diy etc I ask because the way they build houses now are not very soundproof but I live in a older style property which I always thought were better built, but if I am sitting reading or have no tv or radio on i can hear them talking closing cuboard doors just normal everyday noises.

One side...not a peek. The other side...bloody hell has she got some gob on her..!! Nice woman but her talking voice is like me and OH having the argument of the century. I never hear her husband or kids though.
I live in a semi but the way they made the house there is 2 hallways 2 staircases and 2 downstairs toilets between us and next door so dont hear them at all
think it depends on how the houses are built. we are in a detached and cant even hear much if we are in different rooms with the doors closed.

When we lived in maisonettes, we could hear downstairs but not nextdoor and when we lived in a semi-detached which was a fairly new build we could hear next door fairly clearly if they were shouting, or opening and closing cupboards, you could hear what they were saying if they were talking loud.

the place we live in now, is an older style bungalow and very sound proof. The walls are so solid that you cant even get an internet connection on the laptop unless you are in the lounge.
Not usually cos they live in Spain - but those few weeks a year when they're here are hellish!
My house was built in 1860 but I can hear the people next door if they speak loudly, or if they have the TV or music on loud. We can hear the children running about and the dog barking. Where houses have been divided into flats, it can be a problem when people's living rooms are next door to neighbour's bedrooms on the second floor.
I hear next door all the time, we have adjacent toilets so sometimes we hear that too..
A friend of mine, living in a semi- built in the 60s was bothered by excessive noise during the occupancy of one particular neighbour.

It turned out that the fireplaces (both currently unused) were back to back with only a single brick between them. He ended up closing the fireplace off with loads of sound-absorbing insulation.

No sooner had he done it and the neighbours moved out - c'est la vie.
We live in a 1980s build flat and we can hear the people above sometimes - talking, cooking, peeing.... does my head in!
