Ok, I want to get a lip ring, but have a few qs.

Firstly, how long is it before I can put a clear retainer in after getting it pierced because I work at a country club and I know they won't appreciate it.

Secondly, any help in convincing the mother? :P

Thirdly, anyone know anywhere clean and reputable around the Surrey/London area to get it done?

Oh yeah and as a 17 year old could I get it done with out a guardian?

Thanks xx

Don't know re all your queries, but by law you should have a parent or guardian's consent.  Any piecer not asking for it will be dodgy.  Good luck
Why do you want to mutilate yourself?

I see it as more of a decoration...why do you want to fill up internet space posting meaningless posts questioning other people's right to look how they wish?

Sorry, that sounded really bitchy. No wait, that WAS really bitchy! Unfortunately body modification is just an obscure way of saying "yes, I hate the way I look" and trying to fulfill a general sense of inadequacy that seems to be rife these days. Anyway, its only temporary mutilation...:P

ok_computer, firstly, ignore the comments about "mutilation".  Piercing is simply a step on from make up, hair styling and other forms of decoration and I'll bet you a tenner that delilahcat does at least some of those things.  Now your Q.  You should really wait a minimum of 6 weeks before removing your lip ring in order to put a retainer or anything else in there, and 3 months is better still.  It does depend on your individual healing time, but generally the longer you leave it to heal and don't fiddle with it the better.  On convincing your parents, you could try the argument I outlined above about decoration (does your mum have her ears pierced, perhaps?) but ultimately if you have to live in their house you are gonna have to follow their rules.  My mum wasn't impressed when I came home at 17 with my nose pierced (this was 14 years ago before piercings were anywhere near as ubiquitous as they are now!) but she learned to live with it.  At the end of the day it is just a little hole in your skin.  She was no less impressed when I got my tongue pierced last year, but she's used to me by now!  And yes you can get it done without consent as long as you're over 16.  Take some ID with you to the piercers just in case they ask.  Alas I live in manchester so I can't help you with finding a place to get it done...but word of mouth is usually the best recommendation.  Ask around people you know who have piercings.  Oh, word of mouth, ha ha.  Hope I've been some help.

very good answer by nicola red.

Below is a link to Tony's Tattoo's - He is very reputable and has done a lot of my friends tattoos.

Good Luck! - I don't know enough about it, but could you have a clear stud to start with, so you can leave it in as long as possible with no problems from work.

ok_computer, I'm sorry if you thought my question was a criticism. I believe everyone has the right to do what they want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else, but I'm genuinely puzzled as to why anyone would want to make holes in themselves.

If I offended anyone, I'm sorry. And nicola_red, I do use make up but it's not permanent and it doesn't hurt or have the potential to cause unpleasant infections.

Please just ignore my question, I'll try asking less touchy people.

delilahcat please don't worry. You didn't offend me, I just speak (or post) without thinking most of the time, and I guess if I'm not going to agree with or even think about the answer given, I shouldn't ask the question. Like you said, everyone is entitled to an opinion and without wanting to sound too cliched I respect yours, my parents and quite a lot of my mates have exactly the same views. Sorry if I appear to be touchy. If there was a friendly handshake emoticon, it would go here -->

Cheers,ok_computer!
