I was told that you take the measurement on their second birthday. I measured mine every six months and put it on a graph, which makes quite an interesting record!
From the same height and weight at birth, my sons are now 4" different in height, the younger one overtook the older one around the age of eight, which was correctly predicted by the 2nd birthday measurement.
