What's the best way to do the above? Any lotions and potions worth a try?

Not sure Milly, but once pores are cleansed I think the best way to close them up is with cool/cold water.

L'Oreal does a pore minimising cream that seems to work. Can't remember the precise name though-sorry.

I use burt's bees pore refining mask and find it really makes a difference to the appearance of my open pores
