when you click properties on a folder in windows explorer, it gives you options to change the icon for that folder. theres over a 100 option in that window

is there a way to add more icons to that specific folder?

I know there isnt an option via the function itself, but i want to add icons directly to the system folder that theyre in - how can i find it?
what would it be called?
thanks

As the webpage linked above indicates, within the C:\Windows\System32 folder, the files shell32.dll and imageres.dll contain most of the system icons. They cannot be edited by the Windows user.

Icon files have the .ico file extension. Pixelformer is another free tool available for editing .ico files. https://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Icons-Related/Pixelformer.shtml

thanks all

I discovered that when you go to the properties bit, to change the icon, there is an option to look in other folders on your computer, which i hadnt realised before.

so i can just use any icons packs etc.

but I just searched - .ico - in windows explorer & 1000s of icons appeared - i selected all & copied them to an ordinary folder, so i can use any of them for anything now
