Generally speaking can someone be intrested you in by unsmiling eye contact or do they have to have smiling eye contact to show they like you?

depends how long the contact is held, I suppose; I wouldn't go imagining a relatinship blossoming on the basis of a passing glance. If they were staring unsmiling for a long time maybe you had spinach between your teeth or maybe they were trying to look soulful and moody, which might be a good sign.

Jno's right - they might be staring at you (although rudely) for looking our of place for some reason - or are you just loud and drawing attention to yourself? Sorry - but next time, try smiling at the one who's staring. If they smile in return, it might help to show you whether they like you or not. You could always try going up to them directly, and saying - "It's rude to stare, but if you gave me a smile now and again, I might forgive you!" If that doesn't open up a conversation - forget it!
