Where do i stand?

About 5 months ago i met a guy and we hit it off. he later broke up with his girlfriend of 2 1/2 years (for other reasons) and i started seeing him. After a while i wanted to take things further and know where i stood with him so i started to ask questions and this just made things complicated, resulting in him realising he wasn't over his ex yet and thinking we should just be friends. We have been good friends ever since and just recently he came to my house and we kissed for the first time in about 4 months. There is so much chemistry between us and i haven't met anyone since that i have clicked with so well. The problem is his friends still think he doesn't want a relationship. What does he want with me? and should i ask or will i just complicate things further?
