due to very bad bad relationships in the past. I have not yet introduced this fella to my kids as I want to be 'sure' so my question is...when can you be sure he or she for that matter is 'the one'??

The fact is you can't be 100% sure.
I am in a similar situation to you as I have a 2 year old. I was in a abusive relationship for many years.
I've had a few boyfriends since and the one I have at the moment I can't really see it going much further.
Maybe see how this guy is round your friends and other people first. Just take it a day at a time at first

When you feel entirely safe with them, happy when they're around, feel a flutter of your heart when your around him...
Those sorts of things...
Be warned though: he might be frightened by your kids...Men usually are...
