Need to lose weight to get pregnant

I paid a visit to the GP this week as I haven't been well recently. I also mentioned that my husband and I have recently started to try for a family. She was concerned about my age and weight!
I know that I am overweight, but no matter what I do, I can't seem to shift the pounds. I'm eager to lose some weight pretty quick, especially after my GP told me that I am getting old (I'm 34).
Any ideas please on what I can do?
Thanks in advance

How much weight did the doctor suggest that you lose?
just start eating more healthily, strict mealtimes and no junk food - fruit, fresh veg and home-made foods. get tips of the internet - there are loads of healthy eating websites out there. all the ladies at work do weight watchers....but don't seem to lose any weight! also walk more. you find that if you can walk to work or the train station,or to the local shops instead of driving, that helps. if you can't do that, go out for planned walks. the pounds will then take care of themselves.
I have been using a website called Weight Loss Resources for the past 3-4 weeks in my quest to lose weight. In 3 weeks I have lost 8 lbs just by reducing my calorie intake to 1100 per day (as recommended by WLR) and exercising for between 30 minutes and 120 minutes a day... the exercise times include stuff like walking to the shop and cleaning the house so it isn't just sweat inducing workouts :)

Hi tcoys28

I was like you and unable to shift the pounds until this summer when I tried once more and have now lost over 2 stone.

My weekness was for bread and cutting that out was the biggest step change for me. I now eat ryvita instead and see bread as a treat which I might have just once a week - maybe if I have say lunch out for example and fancy some with a nice bowl of soup.

I have no cakes, biscuits or desserts of any kind other than low fat/low sugar yoghurts. Read the side of the packets because some low fat yoghurts have a very high sugar content. I eat very little cheese too and no meat. I'm not suggesting you cut out meat, that's just my choice. Eat piles of vegetables and keep a good variety of them in the house so that you never run out or get tired of the same old things. Have good lean home cooked food and nothing in between meals.

Thinking about it can you think what your weakness is/are? Might be able to help you think of ways to eleminate it and without overdoing it, you could lose a stone before Christmas.

34 is no age by the way!

I'd appreciate any advice that you could give me maidup.
My downfall is bread & crisps, but I don't eat them too often. I have cut down on the bread.
I think my problem is that I don't eat proper meals. I do shift work and really long hours. The last thing on my mind is having to eat. I normally eat a cereal bar with a coffee in the mornings and then survive on fluids most if the day.
I really want to start a family now, and I don't want my weight to be what stops me!
Instead of crisps, try an apple, especially if it's the 'crunch' which does it for you, so to speak.

Shift work is a swine and as Maidup says, 34 is no age :-) x
My daughter told me that if you have a weight to loose you can get slimming world for 6months from your gp. Cant remember how much weight you needed to lose, sorry , but Ican recommend slimming world for loosing weight and not feeling hungry, I ate more and lost weght. How about seeing another gp at your practise maybe they will be more helpful and less critical.Good luck xx
You talk about what you eat during the day tCoys, but I wonder what you have once you get home. If you've no time to cook, could you make a big stew on your day off and warm a bowl of that when you get in? Or put a jacket spud in the microwave and have it with salad and baked beans perhaps.
I sometimes do a stirfry using Frylight and have it with microwavable rice when i get in late. Or I buy a weighwatchers ready meal and have it with a bag of green salad. We have a microwave at work, do you?

What does OH eat and do you eat together?
BIG TIME WALKING WALKING WALKING - IT WILL FALL OFF YOU

I don't really eat when I get home. Sometimes towards the end of the week when my husband comes home at a decent time, we get a takeaway o some sort. On days that I'm not working, I try and cook a hot meal in the evenings ie bolanaise, pasta, shepherds pie etc. If I get a chance at work, I'll have a panini.
My husband and I very rarely eat together.
Its sounds odd tcoys, but if you don't eat very much, your body holds on to everything you do eat and stores it as fat. Its holding on to it because it knows there won't be anymore food anytime soon.

My suggestion is you take some food with you to work. No more crisps, cereal bars, snacks or paninis but have some cereal and a piece of fruit before you leave in the morning, and stop for lunch if only for a short time.

For lunch have some soup or a salad you've taken with you, or ryvita and lean meat or low fat cream cheese, with a tomato and some fruit. How about sushi, that's filling but low in fat.

If you fill up a bit more with healthy fruit and veg and cut out any snacks, bread, cheese, cakes etc your body might feel inclined to let go of some of the fat its holding on to for a rainy day!

I can only say that if I can do it, so can you. I still have a long way to go but buying new (smaller) jeans recently was the most exciting thing I'd done in ages!!

Thanks maidup. I think I have to try really hard to eat proper meals and cut down on my carbs. Lets hope I can stay away from the bread
I have had weight loss surgery, so I can only tell you what I did for my pre-op diet. I had 2 weeks notice and I lost a stone before my op. I stuck to high protein (turkey, chicken breast-no skin, fish) and low fat and low carbs. I ate a lot of fresh fruit and green leafy veggies too. I also use an app on my phone called My Fitness Pal. You have to be honest with it and at every mealtime you record your meal. It calculates the calories you have consumed and what you have remaining for the day. You can also log your exercise which helps too. Weigh yourself on the same day every week (my weigh day is a Monday morning) and record your weight. It can also tell you what weight you should be if you stick to what you are doing.
Some people would say I took the easy way out, but it's not as easy as people think
You have a goal...to have a baby. If you can get into that mind-set there will be no looking back for you. Good luck.

There is also a great thread on here called "Onwards and Downwards" which you should have a wee look at. There are loads of people in the same boat and it means you don't feel you are doing it alone. xx
I wouldn't say it's the easy way out Vodka, especially in your profession x
Oh...and Tcoys, you aren't too old for a baby, it might just take a bit longer. Good luck x

Thanks for the advice Vodka.

My brother done a high protein, low carb diet a few months back in order to start doing weights. He wasn't overweight. Everyone saw the weight shift off him. I might try and do something similar (with not so much meat).
I think I will check out that app you mentioned as well. Thanks for your advice again.

I guess it's the wrong time of the year to think about dieting

Given that you are in your middle thirties and you want to have a baby ; I would recomend that you take a regular dose of Folic Acid , both before and during pregnancy
