//Because the BMI depends upon weight and the square of height, it ignores basic scaling laws whereby mass increases to the 3rd power of linear dimensions. Hence, larger individuals, even if they had exactly the same body shape and relative composition, always have a larger BMI. Also, its assumptions about the distribution between lean mass and adipose tissue are inexact//
They have of course served the slimming industry well in recent years, but most people who try it soon realise they would need to be 'skeletal' to achieve a 'normal' bmi.
I think it does more harm than good.

The big problem with any calculation is that it is pretty meaningless unless all the various factors of your life are taken into consideration. For example;- how active are you? Do you drink or smoke? etc.. What one person would be comfortable with at,say,18 stone, another of the same build and lifestyle would need to be 14 st. But based on personal experience I would agree with grasscarp that somewhere in the region of 14 st. would be a good starting point.
nazia, I'm sorry to say that teen girls wanting to be thin can be very influenced by photos in magazines. People aren't really that thin - it's not healthy. Far better to be slim and toned, but there is nothing wrong with having attractive flesh on your bones too. There are so many more important things in life than what you weigh, or what you look like - life is so much for living, not being fixated on your weight. I do hope you too have a healthy lifestyle, not just worrying about what you eat....
