A friend of mine has been left some shares and wants to dispose of them. I think it is the wrong time to sell but they are only small amounts, BT, Centrica, National Grid and British Gas. Is it worth holding on to them and If he wants to sell, what is the easiest (and cheapest) way to dispose of them please?

The easiest way to sell would to be to go into his bank and let them do it for him. The cheapest way would probably be to find an on line dealing service. His bank may have an on line service but it would take time to set up and for him to send the certificates off to them and get it all registered. Probably not worth it if this is a one off.
