Whilst a checkout receipt from a supermarket does show their VAT Registration number & the date is it permissible to use this receipt to reclaim VAT on an item purchased for business use only?

Look forward to hearing

I wondered about this but when I had the MOT done for the car and paid the bill, they asked if I required a VAT receipt as well as the usual one...so does one have to have a separate one to claim back VAT I wonder?
in order to claim vat back on a business expense you need a vat receipt, it doesn't need to be seperate but some business's do print them that way, not sure why
