Working on boxing day

Hi all,

I don't know if i have placed this question in the correct place, but here goes.
I currently work for a private care firm and have been told i have to work boxing day. I had no issue with working this until i was informed that i would only be paid standard rate.
Is this allowed? I honestly thought that you were paid extra for boxing day.

There is no law that says you have to be paid extra for working public holidays.
Check your contract of employment. Unless it specifies enhanced pay for working bank holidays, there is no legal right to it.

I'm working boxing day and new years day, getting normal pay too.
They can't charge the residents extra...so sometimes they can't pay the staff extra.
I'm working Boxin Day Bank Holiday Monday New Years Day and the New Yeats bank holiday, but doesn't everyone get an extra set of days holiday now instead of double time? I have an extra 8 days holiday this financial year.

it depends on your contract, its not law to pay you extra. our contract states that we get the bh's off but if you have to work due to whatever then you get a day in lieu instead.
all the staff get the same extra holiday entitlement on top of the normal 4 weeks, whether they work any of the bank/public holidays or not.

I think employers could do the decent thing and give even an extra day off in lieu or something. Never mind :o)

Dotty makes many great contributions to AB, particularly on Geneology, and has a lot of useful experiences to pass on but sometimes seems to confuses what happens in her company with employment legislation. I think what you are thinking of, dotty, is the way holiday entitlements are worked out by including public/bank holidays in the statutory minimum holiday entitlement. I don't know what you mean by everyone gets " an extra set of days holiday now instead of double time"
i have to work all bank holidays but luckily i get double time for them
For 'the decent thing' read 'increase their cost base'.
In the NHS (at least in our part) the employer acknowledges that some people have to work BHs (eg nurses and on-call personnel), so all our holiday allocation includes the (usual) 8 days' BH tagged on. For those of us in the offices, we just ignore that and have the BHs off as usual, but front line staff who work a BH would just take another day off in lieu. IMO any company which knows that it's going to need staff in over any BH (as yours obviously would) should have reference to it in their terms and conditions of employment. Check your contract and your T&Cs - they don't have to, if it's part of the job.
