I paid off a mortgage and secured loan back in 2007, these adverts for claiming money back seem tempting, do i just write to the companies and ask? is it that easy? rather than getting another so called claimback company to do it, they take a percentage otherwise!

I've done it, but I used a claim company - I felt that I have lack of knowledge of the technicalities of how to do it, and wouldn't be able to argue my case sufficiently well - you have to get the wording right, etc., otherwise it won't succeed. They do take a percentage but it took all the load of claiming off me, and they chased it up for me. For me it was worth it - they took a percentage of funds I wouldn't have had, if the claim hadn't succeeded, so it was found money anyway. However I believe now you can only go back six years, so you could claim from 2005 only. Don't hang around!
I am in the process of doing it now for PPI I had on a loan. Have a look at moneysavingexpert.com.

There is tons of advice on how to do it yourself as well as template letters, etc. There is also a forum you can use to ask questions if you get stuck.
Remember that you can only reclaim PPI payments if the policy was mis-sold. (e.g. if you were paying for redundancy cover when you were self-employed). If you knew what you were paying for, and if it provided useful cover for you (even though you never needed to claim under that cover) you have no right to get your money back.

Full details of how to claim (without having to pay anyone else for doing so) can be found here:

i got mine back from the bank, i complained by letter, then got a phone call from the bank with profuse apologies, and a cheque for a tidy sum a week or so later.
Did you even have PPI on them? It seens unusual to have it on a mortgage.
I get the impression some people are under the impression from TV ads etc that they can easily reclaim PPI/endowment premiums/ bank charges/credit card charges without any regard to the circumstances.
A good place to start is always the moneysavingexpert website that Buenchico included. This site includes details of the circumstances in which you may have a claim
We've just been repaid ours, with the help of a claims company. Profuse apologies from the bank "that this situation arose".
