My niece is 1 year old soon and I was thinking about investing £100 - but I've no idea how to go about it and was wondering where's the best place to go and what kind of account to put it in .

Thanks in advance :)

Thanks for that. It starts just in time as well, 'cos it's not her birthday til mid November .... looks good to me :)
Well I don't know about the Junior one Chris has mentioned, but my ISA paid me the grand amount of 0.5% interest last year. Unless you keep switching them every year that's the rate you'll get.

For a small child, why not buy her some Premium Bonds? Can't lose any money and she might win the odd amount.
Bad isn't it SeaJay? May as well just left the money in a current account...
There's always premium bonds. There wouldn't be any interest earned, but there is always the possibility of a big prize.

I think I might ask at the bank when I pop in one day this week, or next.
I'd already thought about the nightmare of having to move the account each year just to ensure that we're getting the best rate.
I would have thought that seeing how the banks know that the money would have to be kept in 'til my niece reaches 18 (another 17 years!!), that they would try and tempt you to stay with them by offering some kind of decent tracker. The account will almost certainly be added to before it matures, so surely it's in the bank's interest to try and offer some kinda of incentive ...... but I've never had much faith in banks ...... we'll see ......
Both my children have a Halifax Savers Account. Try the Martin Lewis site, it will sat on there the best deals.
